U.S. Summer Associate - 2019

Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco

Our Summer Associates are ambitious and bright undergraduates who are interested in gaining insight into a consulting career. The internship kicks off with 1-week of training on Cape Cod with interns from all of our U.S. offices. During the course of that week you will learn the fundamentals of what it takes to be a successful Associate at L.E.K. At the conclusion of training you will be back in your home office and spend the next ~8 weeks doing real casework as a part of a team.

In addition, you can expect to participate in the following throughout the summer:

  • Weekly check-in meetings with your case team Manager to ensure you are receiving continuous feedback
  • Professional development training sessions that include sector introductory lunches and training sessions
  • Formal mentoring program
  • Fun, social events with the entire office

Summer Associate Position

The role of a Summer Associate is essentially the same as the role of a fulltime Associate. You are dedicated 100% to a single project and can expect to be on 1-2 projects over the course of the summer.   You will play a crucial role on each case team, gathering, analyzing and synthesizing research and data to address the client’s core issues. Your ability to uncover novel information and lead rigorous analysis that underpins breakthrough insights is what makes a lasting impact for our clients. You’ll take on a significant amount of responsibility, and in a short timeframe.

As a Summer Associate, you will work collaboratively with senior leadership and peers to solve the issues that are most key to the client’s success.

While casework needs will vary every day, the Associate role will involve:

  • Conducting primary and secondary research on markets, competitors and customers
  • Performing rigorous analysis to pinpoint appropriate, practical recommendations for clients
  • Collaborating with team members to transform research and analysis into thoughtful insights that deliver maximum impact for your clients

Why L.E.K. is Different

The role of an L.E.K. Associate is differentiated from the broader market for a number of reasons:

  • Immediate Workstream Responsibility – L.E.K. Associates are expected to be integral members of the team from day one, often owning components of workstreams within their first year
  • Breadth of experience – L.E.K. projects span strategy, M&A and operations with a deep focus on strategy and Associates will typically work on ~6-10 projects / year resulting in a stronger foundation across business skills with a breadth of industry exposure
  • Upward Mobility – L.E.K. is a meritocracy with a young, entrepreneurial culture. Promotion paths do not follow a strict timeline; we promote people as fast as they develop.
  • Exposure to Firm Leaders – Associates have regular and frequent interactions with Managing Directors, Principals, and Managers allowing you to learn from leaders in the industry, and firm leaders are closely involved with Associates’ career progression
  • International Experience – Approximately 65% of undergraduates have international experience within their first 3 years either through projects staffed across global offices, traveling to international client locations, or relocating to international offices, often through a formal 6 month swap
  • Fun, Stimulating Work Environment – There is a greater sense of camaraderie in offices given that L.E.K. teams spend substantially more time in their home office relative to teams at peer firms.
